Nebraska schools urged to discuss Indian mascots

The Nebraska Board of Education voted 7-0 to send a letter to public schools, urging them to discuss their use of Indian mascots.

Education Commissioner Doug Christensen said he opposes Indian mascots. But the board hasn't decided whether to take action to ban them.

Nebraska has about 30 schools with Indian mascots or names. Tribal activists like Frank LaMere, a member of the Winnebago Tribe, say they are offensive.
