Miss America warns Navajo youth about drinking

Miss America 2006 Jennifer Berry visited the Navajo Nation last week to warn youth about underage drinking and drunk driving.

Berry spoke to about 1,000 students from throughout the reservation. She was invited Navajo Nation First Lady Vikki Shirley, who is a local spokesperson for Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Berry, 17, serves as national spokeswoman for MADD. She joined the organization after losing a 16-year-old friend in an alcohol-related accident.

"People are killed by a decision, not by a disease. Drunk driving and alcohol is still the largest killer of youth," Berry told the students, The Farmington Daily Times reported.
