Garcia sworn in as leader of All Indian Pueblos Council


Joe Garcia, the president of the National Congress of American Indians, was sworn in as chairman of the ll Indian Pueblo Council on Monday.

Garcia, the former governor of Ohkay Owingeh, was elected chairman last month. AIPC represents all 19 Pueblos in New Mexico.

Amadeo Shije, the former chairman of AIPC, was sworn in as vice chairman. John Gonzales, another former NCAI president, will serve as secretary-treasurer.

The inaugural feast was held at Santo Domingo Pueblo, where the first all Pueblo council meeting was held in the 1600s. Over 300 people attended.
