Oneida Nation students back to school after closure

High school students on the Oneida Nation in Wisconsin returned to class on Monday, a week after the school was shut down amid concerns over inappropriate behavior.

The school board and the tribal council closed the high school after they reviewed what was described as a profanity-lady performance at a talent show. They were also concerned about graffiti and other activities.

Some students said they felt the school closure was unnecessary. "It just made us look bad," senior Lenita Cornelius told The Green Bay Press Gazette.

But after a week of attending tribal ceremonies and other events on the reservation, the 94 students were eager to get back to work. They all signed a proclamation outlining the school's policies.

"I think I speak for everyone when I say we're going to go past this," said 18-year-old Eric Arce, whose performance at the talent show was at issue.
