Phil Lucas, award-winning Choctaw filmmaker, dies

Phil Lucas, a member of the Choctaw Nation who made more than 100 television shows, films and documentaries, died on Sunday. He was 65.

Lucas, who lived in Washington, won an Emmy in 1994 for co-directing "The Native Americans" on TBS. He was considered one of the most prominent Native filmmakers [Bio].

"His life could make a great film just in itself," Mike Korolenko, a friend and faculty member at Bellevue Community College, where Lucas taught filmmaking, told The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday.
