Hopi Code Talkers excluded from postage stamp bill

Arizona lawmakers won't be honoring members of the Hopi Tribe who used their language to create a code during World War II.

A state Senate committee voted 15-13 against including Hopi Code Talkers in a resolution that supports a postage stamp for the Navajo Code Talkers. The Inter Tribal Council of Arizona supported the inclusion of the Hopis.

Separately, lawmakers already decided against including Hopis in a state monument to honor the Navajo Code Talkers. But one Republican lawmaker said he will work with the Hopi Tribe next year to recognize the Hopi soldiers.
