Oneida Nation shifts lobbying to Washington

The Oneida Nation has beefed up its lobbying expenditures in Washington, The Syracuse Post-Standard reports.

The tribe spent nearly $700,000 in 2006. That's up from about $400,000 in 2005, the paper said.

The tribe is lobbying federal officials on its controversial land-into-trust application. The tribe wants 17,000 acres in two counties placed in trust.

The tribe also lobbies on sovereignty, gaming and land claims, according to Senate records [Office of Public Records Lobby Filing Disclosure Program].

The spending marks a shift in the tribe's lobbying efforts. In 2005, the tribe spent $2.1 million in the state, the fourth-largest amount. The tribe has cut back at the state level.
