tate won't probe 'Chief Illiniwek' decision

The Illinois attorney general's office rejected a request to probe the demise of the "Chief Illiniwek."

A Republican state senator accused the University of Illinois of breaking the law by retiring the controversial mascot without a vote or a meeting. The board of trustees has since approved a resolution to end the "Chief."

The NCAA put the school on its list of "hostile and abusive" Indian mascots. The NCAA policy would have barred the school from hosting post-season games or displaying Indian imagery during playoffs.

The school faced opposition from Native students, alumni, faculty and tribes.
