The Navajo Nation is introducing radio identification technology to ranchers on the reservation.
Under new tribal regulations, all sheep, horse and cattle ranchers are required to outfit their animals with radio ID tags. The GPS-enabled devices allow ranchers to locate and keep track of their livestock using a computer or a hand-held device.
At $2 to $5 a tag, the devices aren't cheap. But the tribe offers 20 free starter tags to every rancher. And the tribe won't be punishing those who aren't able to install the tags.
