White House asked about medal for Chief Martin

An aide to top White House official Karl Rove asked one of Jack Abramoff's associates about a Medal of Freedom for Mississippi Choctaw Chief Phillip Martin, The Washington Post reports.

Barry Jackson, a deputy to Rove, used an e-mail account from "georgewbush.com" to ask Neil G. Volz about nominating Martin. Volz has since pleaded guilty to conspiring to defraud tribes.

Susan B. Ralston, Rove's former assistant, used accounts from "georgewbush.com" and "rnchq.org" to communicate with Abramoff, The Post said. Ralston used to work for Abramoff.

Citing the use of non-governmental accounts, Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-California), the chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, has asked the Republican National Committee and the Bush-Cheney '04 to preserve all of their e-mails.
