First Nation claims success in battle against sniffing

The Pauingassi First Nation of Manitoba is claiming success in its battle against gas sniffing among youth.

As many as half of the children, and many young adults, were believed to be addicted to gas sniffing. That led to a rise in violence on the reserve.

To combat the problem, the First Nation engaged the entire community. Children were sent away for treatment and recreational and traditional-culture programs were started to keep youth out of trouble.
