Groups claim to represent Cherokees in Georgia

Four groups are vying to be called the "official" Cherokee tribe of Georgia.

They all have similar names. There's the Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee Indians Inc., the Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee, Echota Fire Inc., the Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee Inc. and the Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee.

All claim to be the legitimate Cherokee tribe. But they often accuse each other of faking their Indian ancestry.

A state report that was finalized last week hopes to clear up confusion. The Council on American Indian Concerns will recommend which of the four groups represent the official state-recognized tribe.
