Editorial: Diabetes still a major threat in Indian Country

"Diabetes.

It is rapidly taking over the health of far too many Americans. But more alarming are findings that American Indians are three times more likely to get diabetes than non-Hispanic Anglos.

Unfortunately, diabetes isn't something that just goes away. Instead, it sneaks up on a person and changes the entire way they live.

American Indians may be hit hardest by diabetes because they haven't had as long as the rest of the world to adjust their eating habits.

Before 1864 their diet consisted of berries and healthy meats, but once they were removed off their lands and put on reservations, they were introduced to fatty foods.

Now we must ask ourselves how can we help the people of the Four Corners who are struggling with diabetes?"
