Michael Sockalexis, Penobscot lawmaker, dies at 60

Michael Sockalexis, a member of the Penobscot Nation of Maine, died on Sunday at the age of 60.

Sockalexis served as the tribe's representative to the state Legislature during the last session. He was praised for his work on tribal and health issues.

"He was very wise and a great asset to the state. He was able to bring people together and was someone who others wanted to work with. We need more people like him in public service. He will be missed," said Gov. John Baldacci (D) said in a statement.

Sockalexis will be buried on Indian Island on Wednesday.
