County handcuffed and jailed 11-year-old Ojibwe boy

The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe is asking Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson to intervene after the Mille Lacs County sheriff's department handcuffed, arrested and jailed an 11-year-old boy. Swanson has responded that she has opened an investigation, The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

The boy was the victim of an assault on the reservation that is being prosecuted by the county. Minnesota is a Public Law 280 state.

The boy was arrested because the county said he and his mother failed to show up for court hearings on the case. A 13-year-old boy has been charged with assault.

On April 10, the county went to the Nay Ah Shing School on the reservation and arrested the 11-year-old. He spent the night in a juvenile detention facility. <>

The mother has been charged with assault after she allegedly tried to run the 13-year-old and another boy off the road after her son was victimized.
