Inquiry into Native activist's death to be released

The inquiry into the death of Native activist Dudley George will be released today by the Ontario government.

George, 38, was a member of the Stony Point First Nation. He was part of a group that was occupying Ipperwash Provincial Park in protest of a stalled land claim.

Under orders from then-premier Mike Harris, the Ontario Provincial Police stormed the park on September 6, 1995, and fired upon the protesters, who were not armed. George was killed. A police officer was later convicted of criminal negligence.

The inquiry looked into the events that led to the raid on the park. Evidence aired during the proceedings showed police officers making racist remarks about Native people.
