Nebraska tribes receive suicide prevention funds

Four Nebraska tribes will share $140,000 in state funds for youth suicide prevention efforts.

The Ponca Tribe, the Omaha Tribe, the Winnebago Tribe and the Santee Sioux Tribe will each receive $35,000. They money comes from the state Health and Human Services System.

Nebraska tribes have cited youth suicide prevention as a top priority. They met in January to discuss ways to address the issue.

On the Santee Sioux Reservation, at least six teens have committed suicide or have attempted suicide since September 2005. The Omaha Nation has seen at least four youth suicides in the last year.
