World Peace and Prayer Day observed on Thursday

The 11th annual World Peace & Prayer Day will be observed on Thursday, June 21.

Chief Arvol Looking Horse of the Sioux Nation established the event in 1996 to honor the earth and pray for sacred sites. Observances are taking place in the United States, Mexico, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Austria and Switzerland.

Utah will see its first event this year. LaSheena Afraid of Hawk, a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, decided to act after hearing Looking Horse speak earlier this year.

The fifth annual National Day of Prayer for Sacred Places also takes place on June 21, the day of the summer solstice.
