Lakota seek return of Wounded Knee massacre artifacts

Lakota tribal members from South Dakota will travel to Massachusetts later this month to seek the return of nearly 100 artifacts from the 1890 Wounded Knee massacre.

The Henry Woods Memorial Library in Barre obtained a collection of items from the massacre more than a century ago. It includes a ghost dance shirt, scalps, umbilical cord medicine bags, beaded items and sacred pipes.

The library has returned one item, a lock of hair from Chief Big Foot, but hasn't repatriated the other items. Tribal members will visit the facility on June 30 and hold a peaceful protest.
