Ancestry.Com adds BIA records to database

Ancestry.Com has added Bureau of Indian Affairs census records to its database, the company announced.

The censuses were taken on reservations between 1885 and the 1940s. According to Ancestry.Com, they contain 7.5 million names of American Indians and Alaska Natives.

"The stories contained in these censuses will help Native Americans preserve their tradition-rich personal and cultural identity," chief family historian Megan Smolenyak said in a press release.

Among the people included in the records are Gila River veteran Ira Hayes, who helped raise the American flag at Iwo Jima during World War II, and the legendary Sac and Fox athlete Jim Thorpe.
