Salt River Tribe boosts police officer salaries

Last October, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community of Arizona raised police officer salaries by nearly 5 percent.

The effort, meant to boost recruitment, has paid off. According to The Arizona Republic, 40 new officers have been hired in the past year.

"We will be 100 percent staffed for the first time in years," Lt. James Sutphen told the paper.

The tribe's force is now the eighth-largest in the Phoenix area and the 15th largest in the state. Salaries start at $47,900 and rise to $65,526, comparable to area agencies.

The tribe recently helped break up a major methamphetamine ring on the reservation.
