Opinion: Don't bad-mouth Indian Country schools

"The Argus Leader had an article concerning 19 schools in South Dakota that were told they had to improve under the No Child Left Behind Act.

Sixteen of those schools were in Indian Country: Pine Ridge, Rosebud, Standing Rock, Cheyenne River and Eagle Butte. The real problem is with the misfits that we have in Washington who have the temerity to find fault with these schools when it is they themselves who are the problem.

Imagine sending your children to schools with bad plumbing, walls cracking, wind blowing through cracks around windows, poor heating, outdated books, and all the while, the child is living in horrible poverty conditions that would make Third World countries look like paradise. Think about these children trying to study and learn in an environment of gut-wrenching poverty, alcohol addiction, lack of decent food, hand-me-down clothes and gang-related activity waiting for them.

The principals and teachers of these schools should be given hero's medals and commendations for valor while performing under battleground conditions."
