Judge in Canada won't return Native girl to family

A judge in Canada says an Innu girl will be better off in a foster home than with her family and her Native community.

Bernadine and Ron live in Sheshatshiu, an Innu community in Labrador. Their two children, including a seven-year-old girl, were placed in foster care while the couple underwent treatment for alcohol abuse and gambling.

The parents completed their courses and one child was returned home. They tried to regain custody of the girl but the judge allowed her to stay with the foster family, who will be moving further away, to Newfoundland, later this month.
