Catawba Nation to elect first new leader in decades

Ed. Note: The initial version of this posting incorrectly stated the election had taken place.

Members of the Catawba Nation of South Carolina head to the polls on Saturday, July 21, to elect their first new chief in over 30 years.

In March, Gilbert Blue stepped down as chief after 34 years on the job. Critics said he failed to call new elections as required by their settlement act with Congress in 1993.

Four candidates are running for chief. Also up for grabs are assistant chief, secretary-treasurer and executive committee members.
