Fires knock out power on Duck Valley Reservation

The Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Reservation has declared a state of emergency after wildfires caused a power outage. Electricity has been out since last Thursday.

Chairman Kyle Prior said fires have burned over 240 power poles on the reservation, which straddles the Idaho-Nevada border. He said crews are working around the clock to make sure tribal members' basic needs -- such as food, water and medical supplies -- are being met.

An emergency fund to address the crisis has been set up at Wells Fargo in the name of the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes-Duck Valley. Donations can also be made through:
Great Basin Bank of Nevada

Vice Chairman Robert Bear is serving as incident commander. The tribe can be reached at 775.757.2230.
