First Nation reaches $25M deal over gas pipeline

The Canadian government has agreed to pay $25 million to the Dene Tha' First Nation in Alberta to address concerns over the proposed Mackenzie Valley natural gas pipeline.

In November 2006, a judge said the government failed to consult the Dene Tha' about the pipeline. The proposed route runs through aboriginal territory.

The deal allows for a final report on the social and environmental aspects of the pipeline. The $25 million will address possible economic and cultural impacts on the Dene Tha' First Nation.
