Nelson Starr, 'ambassador' for First Nation, dies

Nelson Starr, the unofficial "ambassador" for the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation of Manitoba, died at the age of 71 on Monday.

Along with his younger brother, Starr spent the last 15 years waving to everyone who drove on a highway through the reserve. Nelson and James sat on the highway nearly every day.

"That's what they wanted to do. It was part of their life. They enjoyed it and they just did it," Deborah Chief, the band's chief, told The Winnipeg Sun. "People loved it. Children, especially, loved it.

Funeral services will be held on Friday.
