Navajo attorney wins New Mexico state bar award

Diandra Benally, a member of the Navajo Nation, has been named Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year by the State Bar of New Mexico.

Benally, 29, is a staff attorney for the Navajo Nation Department of Justice. She is the first tribal employee to win the award.

"She has demonstrated the highest degree of ethical standards and exemplifies outstanding commitment to her legal profession," Anslem Roanhorse, executive director of the Navajo Division of Health, wrote in Benally's nominating letter, The Farmington Daily Times reported.

Benally received a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College, a master's degree from Vermont Law School and a law degree from Arizona State University.
