United League of Indigenous Nations formed

Nearly a dozen tribes are the first signatories to a treaty forming the forming the United League of Indigenous Nations.

Tribal nations from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States signed the treaty during a meeting on the Lummi Nation in Washington. They called for every tribe in North America and the South Pacific to join the effort.

The group will promote common environmental, economic and cultural interests. Activists said it comes at a critical time, as governments across the globe are trying to limit the self-determination rights of indigenous peoples. Get the Story:
