Pechanga Band eliminates fourth of membership

The Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians of California has disenrolled about a fourth of its membership, The Los Angeles Times reports.

The tribe kicked out 200 members of the Miranda family, saying they weren't Pechanga. Another 140 members of the Madariaga clan were kicked out, despite evidence that said they were Pechanga.

The people who were ousted say the tribe is motivated by greed. With fewer members, per capita payments from the casino are higher.

The tribe denies the charge and says enrollment matters are an internal sovereign matter. The Madariagas have filed a lawsuit in federal court but so far the state and federal courts have not been receptive to disenrollment cases.
