Michigan to announce treaty rights settlement

The state of Michigan plans to announce a treaty rights settlement with five tribes today.

According to news reports, the tribes will be able to hunt, fish and gather plants under special state rules that won't apply to non-tribal members. Tribal members can hunt and fish out of season, have higher catch limits and can use certain techniques that others cant.

The deal settles a long-running dispute over an 1836 treaty. The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians and the Bay Mills Indian Community are among the signatories.
