Oglala councilor suspended after drug charges

A council member for the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota was suspended after being indicted on drug charges.

Don Garnier, 38, is charged with possessing marijuana with intent to distribute, conspiracy and aiding and abetting a crime. He was a passenger in a car that was pulled over in New Mexico with 21 pounds of marijuana.

The tribal council met in a special session last Thursday to discuss Garnier's status. If he is convicted, he will be forced to give up his seat.

Garnier and Anthony Leo Vocu, 42, the driver of the car, are due to appear in federal court in Albuquerque on October 25, The Rapid City Journal reported.
