Blackfeet Nation fires longtime treasurer after audit

The Blackfeet Nation of Montana fired its longtime treasurer after an audit allegedly revealed "poor cash management, unethical and possible criminal actions," The Great Falls Tribune reported.

Joe Gervais said he was fired because the council never agreed with his spending recommendations. But secretary Willie Sharp said the audit showed that accounting for the tribe's funds was a "nightmare."

"The question was whether we continue on and let Joe try to rectify the problems," Sharp told the paper. "Joe is a good person and he has a lot of knowledge, but we felt we had to be a catalyst in moving on."

Sharp didn't know whether the tribe would charge Gervais or turn over the information to the federal government for possible prosecution.
