Tribes meet for peacemaking conference

More than 100 tribal leaders are in Oklahoma City this week for a peacemaking conference.

Tribes across the nation have turned to peacemaking to resolve family disputes and other civil matters. The Chickasaw Nation said the program, which began five years ago, keeps people together.

"We believe our cultural identity is something that needs to be celebrated, not overcome," Gov. Bill Anoatubby said at the conference, The Tulsa World reported. "Peacemaking is different because when both sides walk away, they're both winners."

The Navajo Nation and the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin have some of the oldest peacemaking programs. Other tribes, including the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, have recently started programs.

The conference started on Monday and ends today.
