Official defends treatment of Native woman in jail

The justice minister in Labrador says the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were justified in the treatment of a Native woman who was held in jail naked for four days.

Minister Jerome Kennedy said officers were trying to protect Emily Jararuse, 41, because she threatened to hurt herself. But he said the incident was troublesome, given that something similar occurred at the same facility with another Native woman.

Mary Adams, an Inuit court interpreter, called Jararuse's treatment at the lockup "a very bad case of abuse," CBC News reported.
