Alaska Natives ask court to halt off-shore drilling

Attorneys for Alaska Natives and environmental groups asked the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to block off-shore drilling on the Arctic Ocean.

Inupiats from the village of Barrow say Royal Dutch Shell's plans for exploratory drilling will hurt the bowhead whale. The community depends on the whale for subsistence and culture.

The Mineral Management Service had approved drilling but the 9th Circuit put it on hold pending review of the case.
