Mayan woman to run for president in Guatemala

Rigoberta Menchu, the Mayan woman who won the Nobel Peace Prize, announced her campaign for the presidency of Guatemala on Wednesday.

Menchu recently formed an Indian political party called Winaq, which means "the wholeness of the human being." But her nomination will be submitted by the Encounter For Guatemala Party.

The election takes place this September. If Menchu wins, she will be the third Indian to lead a nation in Central or South America. The first was Alejandro Toledo of Peru, whose first and only term ended last year, and the second was Evo Morales of Bolivia, who is serving his first term in office.
