Anna Rondon, a member of the Navajo Nation, didn't win the mayor's race in Gallup but she will continue efforts to register more Native voters in New Mexico.
Rondon was the first Indian candidate to seek public office in Gallup in more than a decade. Although she came in fifth out a field of seven, she feels she made progress in raising awareness among Native voters.
Rondon hopes to build on that work for the 2008 presidential elections. She'll be helping the Native American Voter Alliance in Albuquerque register more Native Americans. She also wants to work with the state's new native vote coordinator.
