Lakota man loses 64 pounds on 'Dakota Diet'

Beau LeBeau, a Lakota man from the Pine Ridge Reservation, has lost 64 pounds on the "Dakota Diet."

LeBeau, who stands 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighed 333 pounds at the start of his diet. After 200 days, he's down to 269 pounds.

“My goal isn’t a weight but to be alive in 15 years,” LeBeau, 35, tells The Sioux Falls Argus Leader. "The way I was going, I wasn’t going to be around much longer.”

LeBeau is the subject of "Good Meat: How the Lakota Got Fat and Beau LeBeau Changed His Life" by filmmakers Sam Hurst and Larry Pourier. They tracked LeBeau as he followed the diet, based on a book by Dr. Kevin Weiland.

LeBeau dropped the junk food and started eating more vegetables. He also started eating buffalo meat, which he said made him stronger when he participated in the Sun Dance at the end of June.
