Navajo Nation names interim Head Start director

The Navajo Nation has appointed an interim director for its Head Start program.

Lamont Yazzie works for the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President. He will serve as Head Start director until October 4.

Yazzie replaces Francis Becenti, who resigned last month. Becenti said he left because he wasn't given enough support and wasn't made a permanent employee. He also cited the tribe's firing of its first education superintendent.

The tribe is waiting for a site visit from the U.S. Administration for Children and Families, which previously suspended all Head Start funding. A review found employees with serious criminal records.
