Nooksack candidates call for more accountability

Four members of the Nooksack Tribe of Washington say tribal leaders have become too secretive.

The four are running a joint campaign for the tribal council. Elections for chairman, treasurer and two council positions will be held March 15.

“I’m tired of our people not being treated the way they should be treated,” candidate Bernita Antoine, 75, told The Bellingham Herald.

Candidates Maureen Marshall and Jeff Williams said they want to know more about the tribe's finances. “We haven’t had information for over 10 years,” Williams said. “Where has all of the tribal money gone?”

The tribe recently opened a casino.
