Absentee Shawnee governor abruptly resigns

Jennifer Onzahwah, the first woman elected to lead the Absentee Shawnee Tribe, resigned as governor on December 31, 2007, just six months into the job.

Onzahwah blamed fellow elected officials for undermining her. She also said the tribe is facing heavy debts in connection with its Thunderbird Wild Wild West Casino.

Scott Miller, the former lieutenant governor, is now serving as governor. The tribe shuffled other executive committee positions and will appoint a new representative to fill a vacancy.

The changes come just as the tribe opened the filing period for its elected officials. Miller has already announced that he will not seek re-election.
