Yakama members seek help with substance abuse

Members of the Yakama Nation of Washington are raising awareness about drug and alcohol abuse in their community.

The White Swan Community Coalition to Reduce Under Age Drinking holds regular town hall meetings on the issue. They invited Lorraine Edmo, the deputy director of Tribal Affairs at the Department of Justice's Office on Violence against Women, to hear their stories yesterday.

"A lot of kids are coming in crying and it's not little tears, it's waterfalls -- they're hurt. I'm concerned about my community as a whole," Wapato Police Chief Richard Sanchez said, The Yakima Herald-Republic reported.

Wapato is home to about 1,000 people.
