Navajo Nation Council rejects benefit increase

The Navajo Nation Council voted down a proposal to increase per diem benefits for delegates.

Each delegate receives a per diem between $60 to $150 for travel and lodging per session. That's in addition to the $25,000 annual salary and reimbursements for mileage.

Delegate Ervin Keeswood believes the per diem rate should be raised but said the council was going about it the wrong way. The issue must be put before the Navajo people first, he said, citing a tribal Supreme Court decision.

In a separate action, the council rejected a proposal to impose term limits on delegates.
