New Mexico county names roads in Tewa language

Santa Fe County in New Mexico has given Tewa language names to several roads and driveways on two reservations.

The county worked with San Ildefonso Pueblo and Nambé Pueblo to pick Native names for the roads. Previously, the roads were designated by number.

County Road 84G, for example, is now Povi Pin Poe, which means Flower Mountain Road in Tewa. Road 117 in Nambe Puebo is now Oyegi Poe, or Frost Road.

Tewa is spoken in six Pueblos in northern New Mexico and in village on the Hopi Reservation in Arizona.
