Walk from Alcatraz to DC begins February 11

American Indian Movement activist Dennis Banks is leading the Longest Walk, a five-month journey from San Francisco to Washington, D.C.

The walk begins February 11 at Alcatraz Island. It is due to end in the nation's capitol on July 11.

Banks was an organizer of the first Longest Walk in 1978. "Thirty years ago, I thought we'd do it once and that would be it," he told The Contra Costa Times. "But the idea keeps going. Full steam ahead. Until I go to the grave, I'll be walking.

The walk consists of three routes. The southern route with Banks crosses 11 states -- California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia.
