Tribes in Dakotas thank CITGO for heating assistance

Tribes in North Dakota and South Dakota held an honoring ceremony on Thursday to thank CITGO Petroleum, Venezuela's oil company, for providing heating assistance to their communities.

Through a partnership with Citizens Energy Corp, CITGO has provided $21 million in heating assistance to 220 tribes in 13 states in just two years. Tribes in the Dakotas say the money has helped them through harsh winters.

"It was 40 below zero," David Brien, the chairman of the Turtle Mountain Band of the Chippewa Indians of North Dakota said, The Rapid City Journal reported. The tribe received $400,400 this year.

The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe of South Dakota received $470,000 this year. Chairman Joe Brings Plenty said the money helped 570 homes.
