United South and Eastern Tribes host meeting

The United South and Eastern Tribes (USET) kick off their annual Impact Week meeting today.

Tribes from Maine to Florida to Texas are meeting in Arlington, Virginia, for four days. They will hear from federal officials, members of Congress and fellow tribes about issues affecting their communities.

Today's highlights include Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), the vice chair of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee; assistant secretary Carl Artman; National Indian Gaming Commission Chairman Phil Hogen and National Indian Gaming Association Executive Director Mark Van Norman.

Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith is also due to talk about tribal citizenship issues this afternoon. The USET gala reception takes place this evening.

On Tuesday, Indian Health Services acting Director Robert McSwain and Rep. Frank Pallone (D-New Jersey) are scheduled to speak. Wednesday's agenda includes Rep. Dale Kildee (D-Michigan) and several Bureau of Indian Affairs officials.
