Lumbee Tribe irked by 'Lumbee' cigarettes

The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is urging its members not to buy "Lumbee" cigarettes.

The cigarettes started popping up in local stores last December. But tribal leaders say the brand has nothing to do with the tribe.

“At this time, the Lumbee tribe is reviewing all avenues available to protect the name, identity and history of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina,” Chairman Jimmy Goins told The Fayetteville Observer.

Wayne Moss obtained a trademark for the Lumbee name in 2006. He offered a share of revenues for the tribe's federal recognition bid but said he was told the tribe couldn't accept the money due to its participation in a tobacco prevention program.
