Native village sues energy companies over erosion

The Alaska Native village of Kivalina and the city of Kivalina have filed suit against 24 energy companies, saying global warming is destroying their community.

The 400 residents of the Inupiat village are being forced to move due to the encroaching Chukchi Sea. Rising temperatures have opened the village to flooding and erosion.

The lawsuit blames the energy companies for contributing to global warming. The defendants include BP America, Chevron, ExxonMobil and Peabody Energy.

The suit was filed on behalf of Kivalina by the Native American Rights Fund and the Center on Race, Poverty & the Environment.
